Murfreesboro
Rests In The Old
Albemarle Region Of North Carolina
Situated in
Hertford County, Murfreesboro is served by State
Highway 11 as well as U.S. highways 158 & 258.
This river town rests in the Old Albemarle
region of North Carolina's Inner Banks, about 11
miles from Ahoskie.
The Meherrin, Chowanoke and Nottoway Indians
were the first residents of the area that would
ultimately become Murfreesboro. European
settlers, however, explored this region during
the 16th and 17th centuries, with the first
permanent residents settling down as early as
1710. |
The site
came to be known as Murfree's Landing
due to William Murfree, an Irish
immigrant who ran an operation where
exports and imports were inspected by a
representative of England. Murfree
ultimately donated 97 acres for the
incorporation of the town in 1787.
The average high temperatures in
Murfreesboro get up to 87 degrees
Fahrenheit in July, and average lows dip
to 27 degrees in January. Average
monthly precipitation is 4.2 inches.
Annual snowfall averages 8.6 inches. |

Local students can receive education
from Hertford County public schools.
Chowan College provides higher
education to the region.
Roanoke Chowan Hospital serves the
local health care needs from nearby
Ahoskieh.
You can catch a wide variety of fish
in the Meherrin River that flows
right through Murfreesboro. Among
the native species are largemouth
bass, channel catfish, white & black
crappie, bluegill, the occasional
walleye & smallmouth bass. This
river, in turn, flows into the
larger Chowan River for even more
water recreation.
The entire Roanoke River Basin
region is full of even more
nature-based attractions and
unspoiled beauty. This is a
delightful place for lovers of the
outdoors.
Murfreesboro plays host to such
annual events as the North Carolina
Watermelon Festival and the
Roanoke-Chowan Pork-Fest barbecue.
Different musical groups also play
in front of the local Brady C.
Jefcoat Museum each month. That
museum offers visitors the chance to
peruse a collection of American
household artifacts used from the
1850s to the 1950s.
